Patrick, I wanted to say thanks for some kind words you posted about me on the web, specifically about my book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Algebra. You wrote:

"It's too bad you can't lure W. Michael Kelley away from his franchise at that other publisher. I've been working with his algebra book and his goofy stories, bad puns, and inspired metaphors/similes really make a difference. He (with someone on board for visuals) could pull off an algebra book in HF format if anybody could. "

Every sis months or so, I Google my name and squint through the results. People who write (and actually enjoy writing) Complete Idiot's Guides and Dummies books are often easy targets for criticism, and when I see un-begged-for-praise, it truly lifts the spirits. Thanks so much for starting my day off right :)

[...] I love the book but think the more we crank up the doom-and-gloom, the easier it is for conservative spinmeisters to peg people concerned about this issue as just a bunch of Chicken Littles. There was a great article about this kind of negative stereotyping on Rockridge Nation a while back, which I discussed in an earlier post. [...]

Hey Dan, great hearing from you! Let's catch up the next time you're over Seattle way. The Columbia River book never took off because I started working on a novel. But sometime in the not-too-distant future I hope to start a similar project, essays and photographs about the Skagit River basin and North Cascades. So who knows, maybe we can team up again.

Hi Patrick,

Did you finish the book you were writing of the columbis river, and the pictures we took of the river from my plane ?

Was wondering what happened to you and decided to find you on the net.

I am now living in Cheney, WA just southwest of Spokane. I sold my T- craft in 2002 and have since built a homebuilt RV 8. So I am still flying.

Hey Patrick,

long time no see! Remember the T-craft and photographing the Columbia river?

I'm still around. I retired from the U.S.B.R. in the spring of 1997 and moved to the Spokane area. I sold the T-craft and built a RV 8 low wing plane. Not as good as the T-craft for taking photos, but a lot faster. We now live in Cheney, WA where I went back to work for Eastern Washington University to pay for my toys.

    How are things with you?
